Thames earns graduate scholarship money
|
The NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship Committee announced three Big 12 student-athletes, including one former Red Raider, were awarded postgraduate scholarships recently.
Former Texas Tech pole vaulter Sage Thames was rewarded $7,500 in scholarship funds because of his academic performance off the field and his sportsmanship on the field.
In all, 56 student-athletes (28 male/28 female) who partook in spring sports were honored with the scholarship.
The University of Oklahoma and Oklahoma State University were the two other conference schools that had a student honored.
Qualifications for the scholarship include an overall grade point average of 3.2 or higher for those who competed as a member of a varsity athletics team. The athlete's behavior on and off the field also is considered when the Committee is selecting its recipients for the scholarships.
Thames finished his final season with five All-Big 12 honors for his career including an all-conference performance at the Big 12 Indoor Championships. He also received All-American accolades at the 2006 NCAA Outdoor Championships.
